The Pathology of Experimental Dermal Pneumococcus Infection in the Rabbit
نویسندگان
چکیده
1. The pathology of the experimental dermal pneumococcic infection in the rabbit is described in detail and the findings are compared with the histological alterations seen in the human pneumonic lung. There would appear to be a basic similarity of the lesions in both tissues. 2. A copious production of edema fluid is the outstanding characteristic of the early lesion. It occurs prior to any significant cellular change. In the spreading lesion an infiltration of the tissues with fluid precedes any other sign of reaction between tissue and microorganism. It seems likely that the advancing fluid carries with it the infecting organisms and inoculates all tissues which it reaches. The resulting infection seems not to take place by an active invasion of microorganisms but by a progressive inoculation from an infected fluid.

The Effect of Pneumococcus Autolysates upon Pneumococcus Dermal Infection in the Rabbit
In pneumococcus dermal infections in rabbits, the addition of pneumococcus autolysate to an infective inoculum favors the invasiveness of the particular strain employed, but does not alter the kind of virulence possessed by that strain. Autolysates exhibiting this enhancing property also induce purpura in mice and inhibit the coagulation of rabbit blood. The relation of these properties to the ...
متن کاملThe Action of a Specific Enzyme upon the Dermal Infection of Rabbits with Type Iii Pneumococcus
The action of the enzyme which specifically decomposes the capsular polysaccharide of Type III Pneumococcus has been tested in Type III pneumococcus dermal infections in rabbits. When injected in sufficient amounts, this enzyme is capable of bringing about a favorable and early termination of the experimental disease which ordinarily is fatal in nearly all instances. The results of the present ...
متن کاملThe Evaluation of Active Resistance to Pneumococcus Infection in Rabbits
The dermal pneumococcus infection has been employed to determine the active resistance of rabbits against infection, and an evaluating scale of the gradient of resistance has been established. The significance of the various degrees of resistance has been discussed, and the possible general inferences of the findings indicated.
متن کاملHydrogen Ion Concentration in Exudates of Pneumococcus Infection
The hydrogen ion concentration in the lesions of experimental pneumococcus infection has been estimated directly by pH determinations on exudates from living animals. For indirect evidence of an increase in hydrogen ion concentration within the lesions, the difference in sugar content between exudate and blood from animals with pneumococcus infection has been measured. With sanguinous exudate f...
متن کاملA Study of the Therapeutic Mechanism of Anti-pneumococcic Serum on the Experimental Dermal Pneumococcus Infection in Rabbits
1. Antipneumococcic serum contains in addition to the antibodies against the various bacterial constituents, a non-antibacterial therapeutic factor. 2. The non-antibacterial factor has been separated from the antibacterial antibodies by absorption with homologous, heat-killed, virulent pneumococci. 3. The non-antibacterial factor is not type-specific; it is probably species-specific; it is not ...
